The video below, (actually a sound track), is a talk by Martin Selbrede from the Chalcedon Foundation, about “a Biblical approach to music which emphasizes creative composition reflecting God’s created order.”

Mr Selbrede makes a distiction between music being an Art and a Craft. Music is not just for the few “gifted” ones, but for everyone who is willing to learn. Just as everyone learns their native language by first learning the letters of the alphabet, then using the letters to form words, and words to form sentences, so we can learn music in the same way. We learn the notes, then how the notes make up chords etc. We all have a song in our heart, it is about time others heard it.

I have been robbed of a musical heritage and a ‘craft’ for more than 66 years, and this comes out in my http://wakefieldchapel.com/sheet-music-praise-worship , page. But I have taken steps to redress that by now learning the banjo.

So, take the time to listen to Martin, and become inspired to try something new for yourself.

The Whole of Creation Praises God

Psalm 148

For we know that the whole creation (or every creature) groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. Romans 8:22

What are we groaning about?

Verse 19.  For the earnest expection of the creature (or creation) waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God.

As God has called us, and we believe that  Jesus is the Christ, so we have been justified by Christ by the shedding of His blood for the remission of our sins, and so have been adopted in to be sons of God.

As sons of God, under the headship of Jesus Christ, we will do as Christ did on earth and even greater things than He, because He has placed us here to fullfil His work on earth as God planned it.  (As mature adults, we govern our own life to the glory of God, and search the scriptures for ourselves about this.)

As God placed Adam and Eve in the garden so as to extend the garden to the utter most parts of the earth, so it is our task to do what Adam failed to do.

This realisation has just been revealed to me, yet there are so many out there already showing the way. I came across this video today and it is just awe inspiring.

From the Heart – Rivers of Living Water.

‘Worship in Spirit and Truth.’   Can you sing? Can you play a musical instrument?

You have a voice – so you can sing, right!  If you say otherwise you are not praising & worshipping God, but the person next to you. Vanity, or pride is knocking at your door.

You have hands – so you can hold a musical instrument. So now all you have to do is learn. And yes that does take practice and focus, but who are we doing it for.

God accepts all type and style of music because he has made us all unique. You may prefer the more traditional, such as hymns with organ accompaniment. Others may not have even heard such music, so for them it maybe ‘bluegrass’ or ‘negro gospel/spiritual’. No one form is better than the other, because just as I said, each is unique. Just as we are each made in the image of God, so we bring our image of praise and worship to God as an expression of our love to Him.

Praise and Worship! Where do you begin to explain what all that is contained in these two words?
Initially, a good start should naturally be from Scripture itself.

1 Chronicles 23 ¹ So when David was old and full of days, he made his son Solomon king over Israel.
² And he gathered together all the leaders of Israel, with the priests and the Levites. ³ Now the Levites were numbered from the age of thirty years and above; and the number of individual males was thirty-eight thousand. ⁴ Of these, twenty-four thousand were to look after the work of the house of the LORD, six thousand were officers and judges, ⁵ four thousand were gatekeepers, and four thousand praised the LORD with musical instruments, “which I made,” said David, “for giving praise.”

Can you even begin to conceive of what that would be like to in the presence of 4000 musicians, all singing and playing musical instruments, and you and all your brothers and sisters there singing and praising the Lord.

But in the beginning, what was praise itself.  The first instance is from Genesis 29, we read that Leah has four sons. Her initial reason for naming each of the first three was from her perspective, a natural human (and fallen) trait found in all of us. The first son she named Reuben, ‘See, a Son’, “The LORD has surely looked on my affliction. Now therefore, my husband will love me.”

The second son, Simeon, ‘Heard’, “Because the LORD has heard that I am unloved, He has therefore given me this son also.”

The third son, Levi, ‘Attached’, “Now this time my husband will become attached to me, because I have borne him three sons.”

But then comes Judah, ‘Praise’. She let go of every thing, because she says, “Now I will praise the LORD.”

Is not that our real condition and starting point of real praise – where we let go of all our self, and just surrender.
